Home is, first and foremost, a place of rest and relaxation. Itís where we come home to after a stressful day to be with our family, our pets, or our favorite books and television shows.

But sometimes, the home also has to double as a place of work. Whether you have a job that allows you to work from home, or you just need a quiet place to sit down to pay bills or do taxes, at some point your home will need to be a place where you can focus. Thatís where the home office comes in.

Designing and decorating a home office is different than the rest of your home. Youíll have to create a balance between being comfortable and but also uncluttered. You want to give it your personal touch, but at the same time avoid filling it up with distractions. Finally, youíll have to think about your personal requirements for a home office. Will it be used often enough to merit a dedicated room in your house? Or can your office items fit right into your bedroom, opening up space for things like childrenís play rooms and spare bedrooms.

The bare necessities

There are a few things that nearly all home offices will have in common. Weíre talking desks, organizers, office supplies, etc. However, itís easy to get carried away with file organizers or containers filled with 10 different sizes of multicolored paperclips. One of the benefits of cloud computing and paperless billing is that all of your important paperwork can usually now fit in one small folder.

So, before you start picking out organizers, go through your important papers and find out what you can shred and what needs to be saved. Tools like Google Drive allow you to scan documents right with your smartphone camera and store them safely and securely in the cloud. That means fewer papers and less money spent on organizers and staplers that will just clutter your desk.

What kind of worker are you?

A hard one, Iím sure--but what type of environment helps you be the most productive? Are you better off tucked away in a dark corner surrounded by pillows and blankets, or do you work best in a well-lit room sitting upright at a clear desk.

Before you start decorating and arranging furniture in your office, take into account your needs. Thereís no use spending money on a large wooden desk if you work better curled up on the couch.

If you fall asleep and lose focus in the dark, consider arranging your desk next to a window or even purchasing a UV light for rainy days or dark nights. These will help you stay refreshed and alert to tackle whatever tasks you have before you.

Use space wisely

If you have a lot of items to store, consider a desk with drawers or a cart that you can push out of the way. This will help you from letting your desk get overcrowded.

When it comes to furniture, shop modular. Space-saving furniture can make a world of difference in a home office, which tend to be one of the smaller rooms in your home. Cube bookcases that let you choose a size are excellent for home offices because you can buy only as many as you need. You can always add more cubes later on.

Similarly, desks can also be modular and adjustable. One great option for home offices is a wall-mounted fold up desk. This will allow you to open up the room when youíre not using the desk if your office doubles as a home fitness room.

Do the walls of your home ever feel bland and uninviting? What you need for your home is to add depth to the walls. Everything from the colors of the walls to what you place on them helps to give your rooms a feeling of sophisticated complexity. 


Try Using Contrast On Your Walls


If you choose a dark color for your walls, you can use bright colors as a contrast to bring out the prominent features of the room. 


Use Texture On Your Walls


You donít have to rely on paint to color your walls. Itís a good idea for you to use some tapestry or cloth and hang it on the walls to help add texture and depth to a room.


Reflect On The Room


Using mirrors can help to make any room appear bigger. Mirrors are deceiving in a way, but when placed strategically, they can really add a lot to a room. Allowing for reflections in the room also adds depth and a larger feeling to the space, 


DonĎt Make A Space Too Busy


Avoid using a lot of colors in a room. While contrasting colors add something special to a space, bright, mismatched colors will only make you dizzy. 


Make Use Of Tile


Particularly in kitchens and bathrooms, tile can help to add some depth to the space. Your kitchen can be painted a lovely color and finding tiles to match for a backsplash can really help the room to stand out. Even the color grout that you use can help add complexity to a room. If you have brick, wood, or any kind of stone present in a room, be sure to help those features stand out. The best way to approach design sometimes is to take what you see in nature and bring it into your space. From earth tones to highlighting the natural features in your home, you can really make your home feel well-rounded from the inside out. 


Try Painting The Walls Different Colors


Thereís no rule that says you need to paint a room all one color. Often, you can add a lot to a room just by having that one accent wall. Putting the piece of furniture that will be the focal point of the room on the accent wall can really bring out the features of the room. If your color scheme is leaning towards blues and whites, for example, paint each wall white except for one. Choose an alluring shade of blue for the accent wall. Be sure that your furniture matches with whatever wall color scheme that you choose as well.                 

Whether youíre recreating a room completely, or simply re-purposing what you have, itís easy to make your design work for you and provide complexity and depth.

You may often walk into your bedroom and feel like something is missing or off about the room. Your bedroom should be one of the most peaceful rooms in the house. Unfortunately, due to our 21st-century lifestyle, the bedroom often carries the same kind of stress that other places do. We forget that bedrooms are made for sleeping! The way you decorate your bedroom has a lot to do with the way the room makes you feel. Here, weíll give you some tips for decorating your bedroom in a way that brings you serenity. We promise after you follow these tips that youíll be on your way to a more restful, relaxed nightís sleep! As a bonus, if youíre getting ready to move, these tips work really well when it comes to staging a bedroom for a potential home sale! Keep The Room Clean This tip seems fairly obvious. However, as life gets busy, we tend to throw things in corners and pile up clothes. Clutter in itself causes stress. Keep your bedroom organized. Make sure that everything has a place. When we see clutter in a space, our minds can be cluttered as well, and thatís anything but relaxing! Donít Add Too Many Elements To Your Room Your bedroom should be used for sleeping. There should be a bed and a minimal amount of other ďthingsĒ within the room. Keep desks and other work related items out of your bedroom in order to make the room a stress-free zone. Your bedroom should serve its purpose- a place for sleeping. A reading chair or love seat may be nice if you have the space for it, but donít go overboard with extra elements in your bedroom. Stay Away From Bright And Bold Bedding If thereís one room in the house where bright and bold wonít work, itís the bedroom. Stay away from bedding with heavy patterns and bright colors. If your bedding is too busy, it will cause you inadvertent stress. This is the opposite of what you want in your bedroom. Shut Off Electronics And Keep Them Away From The Bedroom As much as every single one of us is attached to our phones these days, the light from your phone doesnít help you sleep. Try to find a place in your room far away form the bed to keep your phone, if you must put your phone in the room. Also, keep televisions and computers out of your bedroom as well. The bright lights are a distraction from getting restful sleep. Also, just the presence of these items can cause some stress, as they remind you of less-than relaxing things.
